Food 4 Thought

2020 has been a momentous year! But it has also been the year we embarked on the Year of Biblical Literacy. So many people have shared how much this has challenged and supported them as well as stretching them! If you completed the year, congratulations and well done!

2021 beckons and you may be asking, “What do we do next?”

Or “is there life after YOBL?”

This does not seem to be the right time to plan ahead for a whole year as we did in 2020. Instead, we are encouraging you to draw on the wealth of good daily bible reading apps and notes available these days.

We will not be restarting Food4thought or YOBL at this time so this page includes some daily reading options and other resources which we are recommending for members of St Giles. Why not chat to others and embark on a plan together! Feel free to share recommendations of ‘classic’ printed daily bible notes such as “Every Day with Jesus” etc.

Tools, resources and apps we recommend for reading scripture each day

The Lectio 365 app has a greater emphasis on prayer but includes a reading from the Psalms and a short devotional passage each day.

The Bible in One Year is a free Bible reading app with commentary by Nicky and Pippa Gumbel. Nicky Gumbel is the Vicar of HTB in London and pioneer of Alpha.

The heart behind the Read Scripture app is that everyone would read the Bible for themselves and discover the truth and beauty of God's Word. It links in with the Bible Project videos.

You can download and print your own paper copy of the YOBL reading plan and begin again on January 1st 2021.

The bible app also called YouVersion not only has an excellent online bible reader but  free reading plans and devotionals

to help you engage with God's Word every day, a little at a time.

Time to Pray follows the Church of England lectionary through the year. It is available as a podcast or as an app.

Other resources and downloads we have found useful and can recommend

Bible project resources help people experience the Bible in a way that is approachable, engaging, and transformative. They do this by showcasing the literary art of the Scriptures and tracing the themes found in them from beginning to end. They aim to elevate the Bible for all people and draw our eyes to its unified message.

The St Giles Year of Biblical Literacy in 2020 was designed to help us get to know the bible better and to experience scripture in every part of our lives. All the resources are still available to use and share with others.

The St Giles Bible School contains recordings and videos from the in-depth courses we have run in which we’ve looked at books such as Job, Romans, Isaiah etc.

John Piper explores verses and passages in depth in Look at the Book.

You look at a Bible text on the screen. You listen to John Piper. You watch his pen “draw out” meaning. You see for yourself whether the meaning is really there.
