Alf and Hilary

Working with Church Mission Society (CMS) in Santiago, Chile

St Giles contact: Simon & Denise Bridgens Text logo

Alf is Anglo-Chilean and an ordained Anglican minister, and Hilary grew up in South America where her parents were missionaries. They have lived in Santiago since 1975 where they started by forming a church in a poor area of the city. They then discovered their call to live and work in an upper middle class area where there was no evangelical witness. There they have built up the thriving, and still growing, church of La Trinidad which focuses on evangelism, discipleship, and training, and has in turn successfully planted a number of other churches which have become self- supporting. Alf is preparing the church for new leadership in 2021.

In March 2014 Alf completed a four year term as chaplain to the president of Chile, during which time he played a key role in mobilising prayer for the trapped miners. Currently he is again part of the presidential chaplaincy team.  He has an international ministry in teaching and evangelism and in March 2016 was consecrated auxiliary bishop with responsibility for church-planting.

They have 4 adult children and a growing collection of grandchildren.

Ann

Working with Africa Inland Mission

St Giles contact: Liz Kitwood

Ann was a GP in Long Buckby before working for some years in a mission hospital in Kenya. After further bible training, she moved to a less well developed country with little government investment in health care. She worked for 11 years developing the work of the 40 health centres and a 180 bed hospital which operate under the umbrella of the Evangelical Church of that country providing both medical care and spiritual outreach. Ann had varied roles: medical practice, clinical teaching, (the hospital has a nurse training school), monitoring and helping to raise medical standards and improving the financial management of the health centres.  She was involved in a local church and would have loved to find time to learn the local language and contribute more to the work of the church.

In April 2015, responding to AIM's redefined focus on mission and church planting in new areas, Ann moved  to a town which has been little impacted by the gospel.

Following a recognition of the great lack of care for mentally ill and epileptics while she was in the south, Ann continued working with these people after moving to the north. Having started a clinic in her local church, the number of these patients became so great that she facilitated a training event for  local practitioners to equip them in basic mental health care, which some now offer regularly thus spreading the load.. Having learnt Arabic, she enabled several ladies to engage in studying and engaging with scripture, and these ladies are now supported by another worker.

Her main priority more recently became to learn the language of the majority ethnic group locally with a view to opening a work among them.   In February 2020 Ann moved to a town where the majority population speak the language she has been learning.  Here she undertakes some medical work, particularly with mentally ill and epileptics, and visits in order to build relationships and share the good news. She continues studying the same local language. The hope is to form a team to develop this outreach. A couple are preparing to come but they are looking for other members for the team.

She supports the work of a small church, encouraging members who are from a culturally different part of the country to share the good news as well.

Vera Zhuravleva - Russia

St Giles contact: Judith Cooper

Vera works in Russia organising activities in the Bible Centre for Christian families, young people and adults. Her team also run summer youth and family camps.

In recent years Vera has overseen the refurbishment of a house in a village known as The House of Faith and this is now a centre for retreats, training events and camps. Vera has developed an outreach ministry to the people in this very needy village where many families are affected by alcoholism and children are vulnerable.  She and her volunteers also support a local children's home and a centre for the disabled.

Peter and Gill Vriend, David and Jessica - Chiang Mai, Thailand

Working with Youth with a Mission (YWAM)

St Giles contact: Jacqueline WienKamp

The Vriend family served with YWAM in Penang, Malaysia for 6 years where they pioneered work in counselling, prayer ministry and training others in this work. They ran 3 YWAM ‘Foundations for Counselling Ministry’ courses, an intensive full time 12 week course, followed by a field assignment, seeking in particular to enable the trainees to minister God’s healing love and power to others. They had a mix of ongoing and one- off opportunities, including among migrant workers, trafficked women, refugees and Christian workers and Peter was able to offer administrative help to YWAM.
In August 2013 they relocated to Chiang Mai where their roles have diverged. Peter is using business skills primarily in managing the finances for a Christian counselling and support agency.  Gill’s focus is training in mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing and she has run short training events to resource Christians to minister to their own people in Thailand and in several south-east Asian countries. More recently she has become part of a team under the umbrella of an organisation called Living Wholeness and during the travel restrictions of 2020 has developed online resources.

Their children Dave (1999) and Jessica (2001) are at university in England and Canada respectively.

Richard and Frances Jones, in Hungary

In March 2018, in response to a call from God, Richard and Frances moved to live in Hungary and seek mission opportunities there. They have grappled with learning a difficult language, bought a house, made friends and are supporting the work of 2 different churches. Richard is using his ability as a teacher of English as a second language both with individuals and in running an English club for young people.  They are self- supporting financially.

Short term mission

We encourage participation in short term mission ventures, which is mostly taken up as a gap year activity.

Other mission interest

Tearfund - After many years of supporting Tearfund financially but without great involvement, it was decided in 2019 that we would partner with a specific project in Uganda, under their Connected Churches programme. The aim of such projects is holistic community development delivered, in accordance with Tearfund’s policy, in partnership with local churches. Due to the intense demands raised by the coronavirus pandemic the project as such has not yet developed. From September 2020 we have been re-designated as a Partner Church which means that our support will be used flexibly according to need. We will in due course consider the possibility of re-joining a specific project.

Persecuted church - We support persecuted Christians financially and by prayer through the agency of the Barnabas Fund
